Workgroup Infrastructure and HPC

Many of us operate computational resources for Bioinformatics and Life-science research, training and services. This infrastructure and its operation need to be continuously improved, periodically renewed and also financially sustained.

As part of the Platform for Bioinformatics in Austria we have formed a workgroup for computational infrastructure. We invite all research groups and facilities operating or planning large-scale computing facilities to participate, ideally by nominating a representative who administers and plans the computational infrastructure.

Bioinformatics workshop Feb 22, 2018 Linz (after AHPC conference)

The second meeting of the workgroup infrastructure and HPC of the Austrian Bioinformatics Platform will take place on February 22, 2018, at Courtyard Marriott in Linz (Upper Austria, Austria) from 9.00 until 15.00 (room to be announced). It is scheduled directly after the Austrian High Performance Computing Conference, Feb 19-21, 2018, which is held in the same venue.

Minutes

  • Meeting notes
  • Added by David Kreil:
    • in terms of economies of scale / size of the national community / funding, I think it will be hard to have more than 1-2 "centres" for HPCF going beyond typical institute-sized clusters/hardware
    • I am sure access for non-university entities is no problem at VSC if they contribute financially (e.g., buy their own nodes), this may still have an upside for both the entities ("free" room & infrastructure) and the VSC (more nodes)
